Box Office Battle: 'How to Train Your Dragon' sequel flies into theaters

Welcome to "Box Office Battle," The Fly's weekly preview projecting what the top films will be at the box office this weekend.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON OPENING STRONG: Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal Pictures' release of DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" has already brought in a strong $3M from Thursday previews. The animated sequel, which is the third in the series, is expected to earn $43M-$45M in its domestic opening at 4,259 theaters. Note that the film has already grossed over $181M internationally from 49 markets, where it opened at #1 in 40 of them.

STILL IN THEATERS: 21st Century Fox's (FOX, FOXA) futuristic action film "Alita: Battle Angel," written and produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez, is looking at second place in its second weekend at theaters, with an estimated gross of ~$15M this weekend. This is expected to be ahead of AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros' animated "The LEGO Movie 2," which is expected to add in the range of $11M-$12M to its domestic total of over $72M, in its third weekend at theaters.

OVERALL PROJECTIONS:

1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World: $43M-$45M

2. Alita: Battle Angel: $15M

3. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part: $11M-$12M

4. Fighting with My Family: $10M

5. Isn't It Romantic: $8M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Disney (DIS), Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B), Sony (SNE), and Viacom (VIA, VIAB).
